Daria (30 years old) who goes by the stage name DarryPii is half German and half Russian. She was born in Russia but moved to Germany at the age of twelve. From a very young age, she had always loved music. In 2018, she decided to learn how to DJ since most of her friends at the time were musicians and DJs. As she started getting more comfortable with Djing, she made a goal to start producing music on New Year's Eve of 2021. In that same year, to her surprise, she ended up releasing two songs which was more than what her original goal was. I had the opportunity to ask her questions to give us more insight on what it is like to be a female EDM artist in Europe and this is what she had to say:

What is the music scene like in Germany and Russia?

“In Germany and Russia, they play techno in some clubs, not bars, in bars it’s usually hip-hop or deep house. There is some dubstep, but it’s rare to find in clubs. There are, however, some clubs that play EDM, but not many and if they do, it is mostly House/ Bass House or sometimes Hardstyle. The music scene is more updated in Russia compared to Germany.”

What is it like being a female artist in this male dominated music industry?

Honestly, I can say it is very frustrating and somewhat difficult at times as a woman. I feel that I don’t get as many chances as male musicians. For example, my best guy friend who is an EDM artist and I are both looking for music labels to sign us. We both reached out to 10 to 15 labels but only my best friend gets responses, and I don’t. Another thing I noticed is that on my social media, I see a lot of male artists commenting or DM’ing me on how to create music. They were telling me to create music in a certain way that takes away from my own personal style and uniqueness. While I do appreciate feedback, there are better ways to give constructive criticism.

What advice would you have for women who are starting out in music?

My advice would be to just go for it, take every opportunity you get, and don’t think so much. It’s easy to just sit there and be overwhelmed with your thoughts— thinking you're not good enough or I’m scared people might not like it. Like I keep saying, just start, be willing to learn and put in the work even if you see no results.

Daria got into dubstep because of the hard, vocal, and rock sounds which she finds to be relaxing. She also loves house and is currently working on bass house and future house projects. This year she plans on releasing more music and streaming her sets live on Twitch. In the next five years, she hopes to be signed with a music label and being invited to perform at Tomorrowland and EDC. Her top three music inspirations are BTSM (Black Tiger Sex Machine), Sullivan King, and Kompany. If given the opportunity, she would collaborate with Hardwell for a future bass house song, DJ Diesel, and MARTEN HØRGER. On Spotify, she currently has 509 monthly listeners, and her latest and most popular song called The Hunt has over 4,800 plays which features a collaboration with Milano the Don (worked with Riot Ten, SAYMYNAME). During my entire interaction with Daria, I can say she is a very passionate person about her music and work. I love the fact that she is pursuing her music career despite her age and European societal pressures. I am a firm believer that music has no age, and it can be for anyone who enjoys it. Links to her music and social media will be located below. Please show her some love and run up her numbers on all her music platforms!
